Germany: Bonn

A couple of weeks ago I did a post on the Karl Lagerfeld exhibition in the Bundeskunsthalle in Bonn (which you can read here). Now Bonn has a lot more to offer… It’s a charming town with lots of beautiful houses and heaps of shops, cafes and restaurants.

Bonn has many great museums. Of course you’ve got the Bundeskunsthalle, which covers art and design. The exhibition changes every few months, so make sure to check in advance. The Karl Lagerfeld exhibition is still to be seen until 13th September.

Another great museum is the Beethoven House, the birthplace of Ludwig van Beethoven. It contains the largest Beethoven collection in the world and is well worth a visit.

Bonn is known for its many fine museums. So make sure to check this website… there really is a museum for anyone’s interest.

Other landmarks in Bonn are the cathedral, the university, the market place with its town hall, the botanic garden and of course the Rhine to take a stroll near the riverside.

All this makes one very hungry… and very thirsty ! Ruland is a very good Italian restaurant, situated near market place. They have a great prosecco, so make sure to have that as an appetizer. As the main dish I had penne ortolano (penne with a tomato and herbal sauce, with grilled vegetables) which was really tasteful !

For an afternoon tea, you could always go to First Flush near the Altes Rathaus on the marketplace. They have an excellent choice of tea and coffee. In the summer, you should really try one of their iced teas (the Marrakech iced tea is highly recommended !).

To end this post, just one more tip : if you’re into books, or even if you’re not, Thalia Buchhandlung is the place to be. It is situated in Metropol, an old cinema which is converted into a bookstore . It has magnificent art-deco elements. Make sure to take a look inside this building as it has a serious wow-factor…

Rain or shine, Bonn never lets you down… the former capital of East-Germany is well worth a visit so I hope I have given you some tips to go and see for yourself.

Love, Kathleen

    1. I loved the Beethoven house. Bonn is a small city, but really nice to visit! The nearest airport is the Cologne/Bonn airport, situated between these two cities. Thanks for your comment and have a lovely weekend! Kathleen

      1. This is indeed a lovely getaway, mind, not very big! But Cologne is a city nearby so you could do a double citytrip 😉 Thanks for stopping by and have a lovely Tuesday! Kathleen x
