Last week you could read a post about Lyme Park and Chatsworth House, which we visited last year on our holiday in the Peak District. We had a fab week in the Peak District and I really want to share with you another great trip we did back then : a visit to the beautiful little village of Tissington.

Tissington is situated in the south of the Peak District, along the Tissington Trail. This is a 20 km long trail (between Parsley Hay and Ashbourne) which runs along an old railway line. You can follow the trail on foot or by bike. However, as we already did quite a strenuous walk earlier that day, we decided to keep it calm that afternoon and just stroll around in the village.

Tissington actually is a bit like a model village. You enter through a wrought-iron gateway and over a cattle-grid, along a drive lined with trees… quite an impressive way to enter such a tiny village! As it is such a beautiful village, it attracts hords of tourists, especially in summer. We visited it in the first week of April so it was not really crowded.

Tissington Hall is a country house, which has been the home of the Fitzherbert family for more than 400 years now. It was built in the early 17th century and at the moment Sir Richard Fitzherbert, his wife and their children are living at the estate.

 

The hall is open to public at specified times (check the website). We did a tour at the house and gardens which we can only recommend doing. You learn so much about the estate, the house, the family. It was really interesting even our 3 kids thought so! We all (well… perhaps not my son…) imagined living in such a unique place at such a spectacular setting and my eldest daughter and I envisioned ourselves striding down the staircase to welcome our diner guests…

Next to  Tissington Hall is the cutest tearoom : Herberts Tearooms. This tearoom is owned and run by Sir Richard and his wife. We had a delicious afternoon tea there…

Tissington really is small… literally just a couple of streets! But besides Tissington Hall and Herberts Tearooms, they’ve got some cute shops : a shop where you can buy homemade candles, a fantastic sweet shop and Acanthus (which is a gift shop).

After buying some sweets and some candles, we went to our cottage in a nearby village. We thoroughly enjoyed great little Tissington!
