Last week I started this new section on my blog… “Top Tips Tuesdays”. In my first ‘Top Tips’ post I gave you 5 tips on how to survive the sales without breaking the bank and without buying bad bargains. Today I give you brand-new top tips!! These tips are all about New Year’s resolutions and how to stick them… As this new year has only just started, I bet a lot of people have made resolutions… and I bet most of them will fail before it’s even the end of January! Sounds familiar? I will give you 5 top tips on how to stick with your New Year’s resolutions.
1.Set realistic goals!
If your goal is to start running and you can only practise once a week, don’t say “my goal is to run a marathon in 6 months time”… it will probably have to be something like “my goal is to run 5k in 6 months time”.
If you set realistic goals, you will have much more chance of success! It’s doable, you won’t feel a failure and you will find enjoyment in achieving your goal which will give you extra motivation! Talk about a win-win situation 🙂
Plan several steps you have to take to achieve your goal. That way, you have always something doable to look forward to. It will keep you on your toes and it will give you extra motivation every time you reach a ‘sub-resolution’.
If you want to lose some weight for example, don’t say “I want to lose 15 kilo”… That just doesn’t sound very motivating now does it?! You better break that number up in 3 times 5 kilo. It gives you the chance to tick off several ‘sub-resolutions’ which will make you feel gooooood 🙂
Now this tip is very important. It really doesn’t have to be the first of January, the first of the month or the first day of a new week to start working on your resolutions.
Of course you set a date on which you want to start… but if you lose it after a couple of days or weeks, don’t be put off! You can start with a clean slate every single day. This is very important for your motivation and it will definitely help you not to slip away to far off.
I will go back to the diet-example… if you’ve had a good week of dieting and all of a sudden on Friday evening you lose it completely… pizza, wine, crisps… the lot! Now I know from experience it is ever so tempting to just lose it all weekend long… “I will start again on Monday” you think. But don’t fall into that trap! Deal with it immediately and pick up on Saturday, because otherwise, there’s two more days you’ll have to catch up!!
4.Tell people of your resolution!
“Sharing is caring”… so if you share your resolutions with friends and family, you can be sure they will support you! They will help you, motivate you, offer advice,… I have learned in the past that telling people of certain goals is definitely helping you to actually achieve them. So if you want to lose weight, why don’t you tell a couple of people who you can really trust? They will definitely be a listening ear when you’re having a difficult time! And if it’s your goal to run 5k, perhaps it can be helpful to find a partner in crime to help you get up and running.
Now that’s the fun part… reward yourself… even when you have reached a ‘sub-resolution’… it will give you something to look forward to. Reward yourself to a night out, a massage, a new sweater, a bunch of flowers,… it will make the whole proces a bit more easy!
