Aigues Mortes is a completely walled city in the South of France (the Gard). It lies amidst moors, salt marshes and canals so I guess it was the mystery of it all that made me want to visit it! Let me take you on a tour inside the city walls of Aigues Mortes…
Inside the city walls, Aigues Mortes has a clean, rectangular street pattern of about 500 by 300 metres large. Because of the city walls, the buildings are quite well preserved and walking around this walled city actually makes you feel protected!
We entered the city through one of the entrance gates and we strolled towards the Constance Tower to have a walk on the city walls, but more on that next week!
After seeing the city from above, it was fun strolling around in this ancient city, through this maze of little streets which we had just seen from a bird’s eye view.
Aigues Mortes has heaps of cute little souvenir shops, there are plenty of bars and restaurants so I guess it’s your typical tourist resort, but don’t let that stop you from visiting this city!
Make sure to come back next week as I take you up on the city walls 🙂
Love, Kathleen
