When we were in Madrid we walked for hours and hours and the coming weeks I will treat you on a couple of walks we did in the city centre, starting with the one on our first full day.
This walk covers some highlights like: the Metropolis building, Gran Via, Plaza Mayor and Mercado San Miguel. Let me take you on a tour…
As we stayed in the heart of Lavapiés, we could do almost everything on foot which is a big plus of course.
The walk
For this first walk, we headed via Plaza Santa Ana, then onto Carrera de San Jeronimo, via Calle de Alcala towards the Metropolis building.
Then we did part of Gran Via, headed into Calle de la Montera and walked towards Puerta del Sol. We continued our walk towards Plaza Mayor and had lunch at the Mercado San Miguel.
After this walk we headed back towards our flat before we would go to the Real Madrid game of which I told you last week.

Starting off in our neighbourhood: Lavapiés

Gran Via
Calle de la Montera: Salvador Bachiller, definitely worth a stop! In this shop you can buy fabulous accessories: bags, suitcases, wallets, jewellery, shoes, crockery,… They also have a lounge and outdoor terrace and rooftop restaurant. We did some shopping and had a hot drink whilst we let our feet rest for a while!

Plaza Mayor

Heading towards Mercado San Miguel (thank god for Google maps… with all these winding streets and stairs it’s easy to get lost!).
Mercado San Miguel: perfect place to devour some tapas!
On our way back to Lavapiés

And that’s it for today! I hope I’ve given you a nice impression of the city centre of Madrid. More to come next week!
