Books ‘n Blogging: The book lovers tag

book club

Instead of the usual fashionpost on Saturday, I will post something different this time… a post about ‘the book lovers tag’!

Recently I was invited by the lovely Steph from Canada to take part in this tag. Steph has a fun blog ‘Scale it simple‘. You should check it out if you’re into books, quotes, travel and lifestyle! But now what about that ‘book lovers tag’…

As some of you may know, I’m a member of a book club (you can read all about it here). Nothing major, just some friends and colleagues coming together now and then to discuss some books. And ever since we started with this book club in January, I have found my love for reading again… honestly, up until now I have read about 10 books this year and I cannot remember how long it’s been since that happened!!

So when I received this ‘book lovers tag’, it was really something up to my alley! Answering questions about books and reading… mmm… love it! So here we go!!

‘Afterwards’ by Rosamund Lupton… fab read! And at night I’m nothing without my reading glasses…

Do you have a specific place for reading?

When the sun’s out I like to sit on my outdoor terrace to read. Otherwise it’s the couch!

Can you just stop anywhere or must it be at the end of the chapter?

I like to stop at the end of a chapter, or when the chapter is too long, at the end of an alinea.

Do you eat or drink while reading?

Most of the time I do… but nothing in particular. It depends on the time of day I guess. I can enjoy a cup of tea whilst reading, but also a glass of wine! I can eat a biscuit or a pack of crisps!

Music or TV while reading?

I prefer soft music. I usually put the jazz music channel on whilst reading and put the volume as silent as possible.
I don’t like it when the television is on, as that’s too much distraction!

Bookmarks or random pieces of paper?

I have several bookmarks. Recently I got one from a colleague who retired. Such a nice gesture of her to give all of us a bookmark!! And it’s a cute one… a metal cat bookmark 🙂
Then I got one from my godson which I also like using and a third one is a magnetic one. I bought it in The Hague, when visiting a museum in which I had admired the painting ‘girl with the pearl earring’ by Vermeer.
In library books, I usually use the little print of the library on which the return date is mentioned.

One book at a time or several?

I read only one novel at the same time, but I often have a travel guide or a book about photography as a second book.

Do you prefer to read at home or elsewhere?

At home. I sometimes go to work by bus and then I read on the bus as well. And when we go out on a daytrip and we’re in the car for at least an hour, I will take a book with me to keep myself occupied during the car ride.

Read out loudly or silently?

Silently! I cannot imagine reading my books aloud… my housemates wouldn’t be amused either 🙂

Do you read ahead or skip pages?

In a novel I don’t skip pages and I don’t read ahead… anymore! I used to though… take a peek at the last pages… In a travel guide I pick out the pages/chapters which are interesting for me.

Breaking the spine or keeping it like new?

I have a lot of second hand books so they defintely don’t look new!
My kids however are very careful with books and they have actually taught me (!) to be more careful with my books as well. So when I buy a new one, I will take care of it a little more than before… but I don’t mind if the spine is broken!

Do you write in your books?

I don’t write in novels, but I will write in non-fiction books though: travel guides, a book about photography,… I underline and mark interesting passages and sometimes I write some extra stuff, questions and remarks in it.

‘Evening class’ by Maeve Binchy… not exactly looking as new!!

These were the questions I got from Steph, but I would like to add a few more…

Which book did I finish last?

I just finished ‘The Inn at Rose Harbor’ by Debbie Macomber. As I had just had surgery on my shoulder, I wanted a quick and easy read and this book ticked those boxes! It was a pleasant summer read 🙂

Current read?

After that pleasant summer read, I thought it was time for some serious stuff! So now I am reading ‘Pride and Prejudice’ from Jane Austen. I know the story by heart as I have seen the 1995 BBC series so many times… but I really made it a goal to read the book as well.  And so far so good! I only started reading it on Tuesday and I expect to finish it today or tomorrow!

Next read?

My next read will probably be ‘Gone Girl’ by Gillian Flynn, which I will have to read for our July book club gathering.

Goodreads account?

Yip! I recently registered at Goodreads, which was a tip from my daughter. I still have got a lot to explore on Goodreads, but what I like about it so far is, that it makes you want to read more and more 🙂 You can find my Goodreads account here.
Well, this finishes my ‘book lovers tag’! I won’t tag anyone, but if you want, you can copy the questions to tag other book lovers or to use for yourself. Have fun!
Love, Kathleen
