Until the 13^th of September the Bundeskunsthalle in Bonn hosts an exhibition about one of the world’s most renowned fashion designers : Karl Lagerfeld.

For about 60 years now he has dominated the world of fashion and he has worked for various fashion houses such as Balmain, Patou, Chloé, Fendi, Chanel and of course his own label Karl Lagerfeld.

For the exhibition Modemethode, Lagerfeld devised every single detail : the garments and accessories, the architectural setting, the music, the design of the catalogue,…

The exhibition starts with a replica of the yellow coat it all started with in 1954. With this coat he won the Woolmark prize and from then onwards he went from fashion house to fashion house to become who he is now : a true fashion artist, a perfectionist, a visionaire.

After the yellow coat, the exhibition takes you on a journey through 4 different fashion houses Karl Lagerfeld has worked for or still works for : Fendi, Chloé, Chanel and his own label. Comparing the various labels, makes you see how much of a diverse designer Lagerfeld really is. He stays true to each label’s own style.

The pièce de résistance of the exhibition is the haute couture room. In the room you are immediately taken by the art work on Gmund paper (this is the type of paper Karl Lagerfeld uses to sketch on). The art work is designed by a Spanish trio Wanda Barcelona and it gives the room a fairy-like feeling. Walking through this room is really impressive. The designs on show are pieces of art to die for. The ability to look at them so closely, gives you an image of the hours and hours of work that are put into each one of these garments. Every design is astonishingly beautiful. Every piece is just so timeless. I must confess that I felt humble walking through this haute couture room… a really odd feeling that I never ever experienced at an exhibition !

This exhibition is simply a must see for every fashion and art lover… let yourself be fascinated by Karl Lagerfeld !
